Pete Carroll To Move Into Advisor Role With Seahawks

Seahawks and Head Coach Pete Carroll, who holds the record for the most wins in franchise history over 14 seasons, have mutually agreed on a transition in his role, moving from head coach to an advisory position within the organization, as announced by Seahawks Chair Jody Allen on Wednesday.

"After thoughtful discussions and careful consideration for the best interests of the franchise, we have reached an amicable agreement with Pete Carroll to transition from Head Coach to remain with the organization as an advisor," stated Allen in a release. "Pete, the winningest coach in Seahawks history, brought the city its first Super Bowl title and has made a significant impact both on the field and in the community over the past 14 years. His leadership expertise and the culture of the championship he has built will remain an integral part of our organization moving forward.

"Pete will always hold a special place as a beloved member of the Seahawks family."

This decision comes in the wake of the Seahawks finishing the 2023 season with a 9-8 record, missing the playoffs for only the fourth time since Carroll and general manager John Schneider assumed their roles in 2010.

During Carroll's tenure, the Seahawks enjoyed a winning record in 11 out of 14 seasons, securing playoff berths 10 times and clinching five NFC West titles. The pinnacle of their success came in 2013 when the team, led by Carroll, won the franchise's first Super Bowl with a dominating 43-8 victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. The Seahawks returned to the Super Bowl the following year, joining an elite group of teams to appear in consecutive Super Bowls this century alongside New England and Kansas City.

Under Carroll's guidance, the Seahawks led the NFL in scoring defense for four consecutive seasons from 2012 to 2015, a feat unmatched in the Super Bowl era. Finishing his coaching tenure with a 137-89-1 regular season record, Carroll, alongside Bill Belichick, was named to the NFL's 2010s All-Decade Team.

Before joining the Seahawks, Carroll had a successful NFL career as an assistant, defensive coordinator, and head coach for both the Jets and Patriots. Following his NFL stint, he spent nine seasons at USC, where he built the Trojans into one of the most successful college football programs in history, claiming two national championships and four Rose Bowl titles.

Carroll's success with the Seahawks was not only about on-field achievements but also centered around the culture he cultivated. He aimed to debunk the notion that coaching at the highest level couldn't be both enjoyable and competitive. Carroll's relationship-based approach, commitment to individualized evaluations, and genuine care for his players created an environment where individuals flourished both personally and professionally.

As General Manager John Schneider emphasized, "Pete's culture is not about beating people down. It's about instilling confidence and building them up, creating a positive environment where people thrive. His ability to instill confidence in people quickly is truly remarkable."

The culture Carroll fostered in Seattle allowed players to feel genuinely cared for, contributing to their success on and off the field. Seahawks Legend Cliff Avril noted, "He's more engaged with who you are as a person, which is pretty cool. And it's genuine, so I think it helps us overall as people, and it makes us better football players. You're allowed to be yourself. Most other places, it's not like that."
